The Housing Act of 1937 was enacted by Congress to provide financial assistance to states and political subdivisions for the elimination of unsafe and unsanitary housing conditions.

The Hazleton Housing Authority (HHA) was established in 1968 and between the years of 1970-1971 constructed four sites of Public Housing. HHA also currently manages 100 units of families at our Vine West Community, 100 units of elderly and disabled at 50 E and 70 west Juniper Street locations, and 99 units at our 320 West Mine Street location. Our Main office is located at 320 West Mine Street. Hours are from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Fridays, closed holidays and weekends.

The HHA has a long history of stable and competent management. Site managers and maintenance staff are physically located at the developments.

The HHA provides affordable, decent and sanitary housing opportunities to low and moderate-income families, including elderly and disabled persons, while supporting programs to foster economic self-sufficiency and personal growth.

The HHA provides rental assistance to families who pay no more than 30% of their income towards rent. With the exception of cable TV and telephone expenses, the HHA pays all utilities.

Public housing is limited to low-income families and individuals. Eligibility is determined based on:

  1. Annual gross income.
  2. Whether you qualify as elderly, a person with a disability or as a family.
  3. U.S. citizenship or eligible immigration status.

If you are eligible, the HHA will check your references to make sure you and your family will be good residents. HHA will deny admission to any applicant whose habits and practices may be expected to have a detrimental effect on other residents or on the neighborhood’s environment.

At the HHA, a security deposit of no more than $99 is required and monthly rent is based on your income (income qualifications apply). All of our public housing locations including the following appliances: stove, range and refrigerator and washer/dryer hook-ups or on-site laundry facilities. Every one of our residents has access to our on-site manager and 24-hour maintenance staff.
